Counselling Services

During General Counselling a number of different therapies will be integrated to provide an approach tailored to the individual needs of each client.
The integrative approach asks three basic questions: 1) Where are you now? 2) Where do you want to go? 3) How are you going to get there? In other words you and your therapist act collaboratively to work out a plan of action, to put that plan into operation, to review the plan and the outcome and to make any necessary changes. At the first appointment, you will be given an opportunity to tell the story of your past and clarify what is troubling you.

You may ask yourself the question:
‘Why does this keep happening to me over and over again?’
At Sky Counselling people are helped to unravel what is happening
and then move on and make changes that lead to a happier
and more productive way of living.

Counselling can be a painful process initially. Clients are often surprised to find themselves telling the professional counsellor something they’ve never disclosed to another person. This can be followed by a great feeling of relief. It is as if the Genie is out of the bottle but it is in a safe place; the counselor’s role is to support the client throughout.
Your introductory therapy session will be an opportunity to ask Jacqueline more questions about what she can offer and jointly look at the issues that are troubling you. It is a chance to get to know one another and begin to develop this important professional relationship.

Therapies integrated in the package
The Person Centred Approach. All good counselling is underpinned by the core conditions and values of this approach. It means that the counsellor will develop a genuine and empathic understanding of the client’s perspective, discovering how the client feels or how it is to ‘walk in his/her shoes’. Respect for the client as a person is key to the approach even if the client’s behaviour is counter-productive.
Cognitive Behavioural TherapyCognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a very useful approach that allows people to evaluate what is going on in their lives, to understand why and how things are going wrong for them and to initiate change.

Rational Emotive Behaviour TherapyRational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) is a branch of CBT. It is particularly useful in helping to deal with feelings of anxiety, depression, grief, guilt, shame, the need to be perfect at all times and low self-esteem.
Transactional AnalysisTransactional Analysis (TA) is a way of helping people to understand how they have come to be the way they are and why things are not working out well for them. It also promotes better communication skills and better ways of reacting to some of those around us who have, until now, been able to ‘push our buttons’ leaving us to feel very bad about ourselves at times.

You are now seeking help because your own best efforts
have not worked out as you hoped.
Maybe you have come to realize that you can’t change other people,
you can’t undo the past, however regrettable,
and you can’t change the future.
But you can change your own actions, thoughts and feelings today.
Therapy at Sky Counselling can show you ways of doing just that.
